Termites are a group of **detritivorous** eusocial insects that consume a wide variety of decaying plant material, primarily wood, leaf litter, and soil humus. Often referred to as "white ants" due to their moniliform antennae and the soft-bodied, frequently unpigmented worker caste, termites are not ants and are only distantly related to them. Currently, there are 2,972 known species of termites, with 2,105 belonging to the Termitidae family. Several factors, such as moisture problems, wood-to-ground contact, nearby termite colonies, and termite swarming events, can lead to termite infestations in homes. Being mindful of these conditions can help prevent termite infestations.
Termites are members of the insect order **Isoptera**, which is a suborder of the order **Blattodea**, which also includes cockroaches. Based on their habits, living quarters, and diet, termites are divided into multiple families. The subterranean termites, or **Rhinotermitidae** family, live underground and construct vast networks of mud tubes to obtain cellulose and wood. **Termitidae** is the largest family and contains higher termites, which are mostly found in tropical regions and feed on a variety of materials such as wood, grass, and leaves. Often infesting wooden structures and furniture, **Kalotermitidae**, or drywood termites, live in dry wood that is not in contact with soil. Harvester termites, or **Hodotermitidae**, are desert-dwelling insects that mostly consume grass and plant material. Representing just one extant species (*Mastotermes darwiniensis*), the **Mastotermitidae** family is thought to be the most archaic and is capable of consuming a broad variety of foods. The dampwood termites, or **Archotermopsidae**, are found in forests and prefer moist, decaying wood. The **Serritermitidae** family is a small family found in South America. In ecosystems, each family has a distinct function; some serve as decomposers, while others pose major risks to agriculture and human structures.
Termites affect people in a number of ways. Some human tribes, like the Makiritare of Venezuela's Alto Orinoco area, consider them a delicacy and frequently employ them as a spice in their cuisine. They are also used in conventional medical treatments for a range of illnesses and conditions, including bronchitis, asthma, influenza, and other conditions. The majority of termite species are harmless, despite their most well-known use as structural pests. The regions with the highest concentrations of economically significant termite species are North America, Australia, the Indian subcontinent, tropical Africa, and Central America and the West Indies. Termites can cause extensive damage to structures, agriculture, and forests by feeding on wood and other cellulose-based materials. In buildings, termites weaken wooden beams, floors, and walls, leading to costly repairs and potential safety hazards, such as structural collapse. They can also damage furniture, books, and paper, hollowing out valuable items and assets. In agriculture, termites attack crops like sugarcane, maize, and rice, reducing yields and causing economic losses. Additionally, termites pose a threat to plantation trees and forests, weakening or killing trees and impacting timber resources. Their underground activity can damage infrastructure like utility poles, cables, and fencing. Infestations often go unnoticed until significant destruction has occurred, leading to high repair and pest control costs. Furthermore, termite-induced moisture can promote mold growth, posing health risks. While termites play a vital ecological role as decomposers, their destructive behavior in human environments can result in financial losses, property value depreciation, and environmental imbalances. It is also anticipated that some pest termites may spread their range due to increased urbanisation and connectivity.
